Course Overview
Join us for 5 Days of Advanced OC1 & C1!
Jérôme Côté- Jacob has made a name for himself in the world of single-bladed paddling, he’s pushed the limits of C1 creeking and river running both abroad (Amazing paddling trips in the PNW, Zambia, Chile and Ecuador- it’s so great where the canoe paddle can take you!) and at home in Quebec and Ontario. He also is a long-time whitewater instructor here at MKC, so we want to bring together a group of C1 and OC1 paddlers, to spend 5 days workshopping paddling techniques specific to single blade boating like how to control your bow- to be dry, to boof, and thrive in bigger water with more control and, of course, finesse. There will also be lots of outfitting tips shared, because it wouldn’t be a single-blade boater’s course without it.
Who is this Course for?
If you are already paddling a C1 and want to dive into specifics about body mechanics, outfitting, boofing skills- this is the course for you! If you are a solo open canoeist and want to try your hand (knees?) at a C1, aka a closed-boat aka a decked solo canoe- this is the course for you! If you are a whitewater kayaker, and have been in awe of C1 paddlers’ ability to move around with one blade- this is the course for you!

What do folks think of Jerome?
I was a student in the Solo Canoe course. It could not have been better. Instructor Jerome was highly skilled and was able to take my basic whitewater ability and transform it. He was patient, sensitive, encouraging but not pushy, and was able to do exactly what he said he would do as we shot rapids together. It only took one or two days for me to fully understand was I was previously doing wrong and then spent the rest of the time practicing the better ways. Not only did I accomplish the goals of reading water better and becoming more precise in controlling my canoe, I learned fun skills like surfing and practiced “rock hugging” in the case of a broach. I wish I could have stayed another week.

our instructor Jérôme was amazing. Asked us in the 5 minutes what we wanted to learn, and planned accordingly. He was patient with those who were struggling and kept a great sense of humour.
